Miami-Dade commissioners voted yesterday to approve a deal with Brightline/Virgin Trains for a train station at PortMiami.

Details of the project were revealed in a Memorandum of Understanding between the county and train operator:

Station location and size

Virgin will be allowed to use a tent structure currently at Terminal H, either for a permanent train station or as a temporary staging area if they choose to do so (the tent is adjacent to what will become the new Arquitectonica-designed Virgin cruise terminal).

There is around an acre of land available for the station adjacent to the train tracks.

The train terminal will be approximately 20,500 square feet.

Cost and funding

Construction cost is estimated to total $15.2 million.

The county will make a one-time contribution of $5.2 million towards construction. A $2 per passenger fee will be repaid to the county.

Virgin will cover the remaining $10 million, along with maintenance, and also contribute $35 million in rolling stock towards the project.

Service

Service will begin before the end of 2020

Trains will operate twice daily at first, before ramping up to at least four times daily on high volume days. They will cross Biscayne Boulevard and stop at MiamiCentral before continuing to points north including Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

Cruise passengers will be able to check luggage at other Brightline stations, and bags will be delivered to their cruise ship cabin.

A shuttle service will drop passengers from the port train station to their cruise ship.

PortMiami Intermodal Facility

The Port and Virgin Trains have agreed to cooperate on a possible relocation of the port train station if the County decides to build an intermodal facility at PortMiami in the future.
