Miami’s Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board has approved a plan to build an observation wheel at Bayside Marketplace in downtown Miami.
Sky Views of America and Bayside told the board that they plan to have the Ferris wheel operational in time for the Super Bowl in February 2020, according to Miami Today.
The wheel will be just a fifth of the size of the London Eye, but Bayside representatives have previously said that the Miami wheel would be “iconic.”
A zoning waiver was needed for the wheel’s height, which will stand at 176 feet. The London Eye is 443 feet.
The spokes of the wheel will feature LED lighting, but illumination levels will be regulated by the city. A neighborhood association called the Downtown Neighbors Alliance has said they are OK with the proposal.
Hurricane force winds of 150 miles per hour can be withstood by the wheel, Sky Views claims. They also ate able to dismantle the entire wheel in just three days if a storm threatens.
